What we’ll need from you
TRAFFIC is looking for a Programme Officer - Policy to lead, develop and implement an effective policy and advocacy effort for TRAFFIC to address illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade concerns in Southeast Asia. Key to this is affecting improvement in the legal and regulatory framework governing wildlife trade and areas of work relevant to the successful enforcement and prosecution of wildlife crime. It will require proactive engagement with key partners and stakeholders to deliver on TRAFFIC’s aims in Southeast Asia.

In this role, you will get to:
Manage and implement projects, including the supervision of personnel as required, delivering on reporting requirements and coordination with donors and partners involved
Lead and undertake activities for the uptake of legal and regulatory recommendations concerning wildlife trade
Lead and engage with enforcement, prosecution and judiciary partners on wildlife crime matters, particularly in Malaysia
Provide strategic leadership and advice to TRAFFIC’s policy approaches
Monitor wildlife trade related policies and implementation, including on prosecution and conviction of wildlife crimes in Southeast Asia
Undertake studies and research to develop required policy briefs, largely targeted at governments, either as part of a strategic organisational approach at the national, regional or international level
Build networks that boost TRAFFIC’s leadership on wildlife trade issues
Lead and support in the development of proposals to achieve TRAFFIC’s priorities in Southeast Asia.
Skills and experience
The Programme Officer - Policy is a vital role and to be successful, we are looking for someone who meets the following criteria:
Minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent in social sciences, international relations, law, development studies or community development.
At least five-years relevant work experience comprising advocacy and policy in public international development and capacity building.
Proven skills in policy analysis and development.
Good understanding of conservation policy issues, particularly in the Southeast Asian region; knowledge on Malaysia and Indonesia specifically is preferred
Good understanding of global conservation and wildlife trade issues.
Litigation experience and understanding of criminal proceedings will be an advantage.
Excellent oral and written English; Bahasa Malaysia and or Bahasa Indonesia will be an advantage. Additional language skills in other Southeast Asian languages will be an advantage.
IT skills in Microsoft Office applications and other computer management packages
Must be eligible to work in Malaysia.
